Who is this course suitable for?

RN Child and RN Adult nurses currently working with neonates. Minimum of 6 months completed in current neonatal setting.

Course Overview

This module has been designed to enable nurses working within neonatal units to provide safe, compassionate and effective care for neonates and their families in special care and high dependency areas. The focus of this module is to provide theoretical knowledge and the essential core skills required to care proficiently and holistically for newborns admitted to special care and high dependency nurseries. This module forms part of the neonatal pathway, enabling registered nurses to become neonatal Qualified in Specialty (QIS).

This module aims to:

• Provide in-depth knowledge and understanding in order for participants to assess, plan, interpret and deliver holistic and evidence-based care alongside the multidisciplinary team.
•  Allow participants to discuss and select appropriate care interventions, plan transfers and discharges for neonates requiring special and high dependency care.
•  Enable participants to recognise deterioration and neonatal emergencies and escalate using appropriate interventions within their limitations.

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

• Critically discuss underpinning pathophysiology of disease processes through systems approach in order to implement appropriate care interventions for neonates.
• Demonstrate understanding of safe nursing interventions when caring for neonates requiring special care and high dependency care.
• Evaluate relevant care plans and documentation for neonates in special care and high dependency area, with the ability to initiate and modify plans as required.
• Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of appropriate communication skills with families and other members of the multidisciplinary team when caring for neonates across a variety of situations.

150 Hours of blended learning
