iRescue: Deteriorating Patient Course Details
About
King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and King’s Commercial Services invite all nurses to attend the iRescue: Deteriorating Patient Course, created and developed by King’s Critical Care Outreach team. Designed to provide nursing staff with the skills and confidence to recognise and manage patient deterioration.
The iRescue course consists of two parts, e-leaning modules and a one day face-to-face training course held in London.
The course will be running throughout the year, once you sign up, you will gain access to the e-learning modules in which a minimum of 80% pass rate is needed to qualify for the face-to-face training. Please note that your e-learning training needs to be completed at least one month prior to your study day in order for you to have time to review any pre-course materials for the day.
Study days take place every month, dates will be released to you once you have registered.
Course Overview
This course will give nurses from acute hospital settings the practical skills needed to recognise and manage deterioration, as well as the human factor skills needed to feel confident in escalating deteriorating patients.
Enabling the development of the assessment of a deteriorating patient using an ABCDE approach. Enhance skills such a communication, leadership, and teamwork to aid with the management of deteriorating patients.
Course delivery
This course is delivered via blended learning, which consists of:
E-Learning modules (study time is approximately 4 hours):
- Interactive sessions focused on ABCDE assessment, virtual skills workshop, and common patient scenarios such as anaphylaxis, sepsis, acute kidney injury, hospital acquired pneumonia and hyperkalemia to name a few
- Final assessment at the end of the module to test the candidate’s knowledge
- Only when this has been passed, will students then have access to a face-to-face study day will be issued to all registered candidates
Face-to-face study day (7.5 hours) held at King’s Academy – South London:
- Interactive group work put into practice knowledge and skills learnt from e-learning in The King’s Academy state of the art Simulation Suite giving real life ward environment
- Focus on teamwork, human factors and leadership in emergency scenarios, safe learning environment to build confidence and put into practice in your place of work
- The study day is assessed, and participants receive a certificate of completion
- Group of 16 candidates per course
Course Objectives

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
- Gain essential knowledge and understanding of patient deterioration within acute hospital wards
- Develop skills in the assessment of a deteriorating patient using an ABCDE approach
- Expand your understanding of the impact human factors have on deteriorating patients, and develop skills such a communication, leadership and teamwork to aid with management of deteriorating patients
- Confident in recognising and responding to sudden acute deterioration in these patients

Certificate of Completion
Once both the on-line learning module and study day session are marked as complete, all successful nurses will receive:
