Who is this course suitable for?

This course is designed for Health Professionals caring for patients with cancer and haematological disorders to further increase their theoretical and practical knowledge.

Course Overview

Students will be able to deliver evidence base care, recognising deterioration, from diagnoses, treatment and living beyond with the disease. The module will cover the foundations to haematology, diagnosis and management of blood cell disorders, anatomy and physiology, care of cancer patients and systemic anti-cancer therapy.

This module aims to:

• Enable students to understand the principles of haematological malignancies contributing to high standard holistic care and critical evaluation of current practices through the treatment journey and onwards.
• Provide in-depth knowledge of innovative enhanced practices available to ensure patient improvement in care and excellent experience.
• Equip students with the knowledge and skills to safely administer Systemic Anti-Cancer therapy, to identify and manage the side effects of the drugs and to act appropriately in case of deterioration.
• Empower students to manage the impact of these treatments on the patient physical, psychological and psychosocial wellbeing and be aware of the professional and legal aspects.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. 1. Critically assess, plan and evaluate current and enhanced evidence –based practices for patients with haematological disorders.
   2. Critically examine the pathophysiology of haematological diseases and the challenges caring for this patient population.
   3. Develop knowledge and understanding of strategies used to communicate and work in partnership with people, families, carers and members of the interdisciplinary team.
   4. Identify the mechanism of action of different SACT and apply knowledge and skills on management of side effects and toxicities.

150 hours scheduled learning and teaching

• Guided independent study (self-managed time)
• Practice Learning Simulation & debriefing
• 5 Classroom sessions

40% or more required to pass
